Toronto Council approved a city purchase of two acres of the David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute lands for $4.2 million at its meeting last week.
The “city-building proposal” Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson negotiated for the property at Midland and Lawrence avenues also includes the future dedication of another 0.6 acres for parkland and a 62-space child care centre.

Months of negotiations may save three acres of the David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute property from development, but many Bendale residents said that isn’t enough.
City of Toronto planners and Michael Thompson, the local councillor, say they reached a deal with the Toronto District School Board, which plans to sell off DMTCI and Bendale Business and Technical Institute next door, building a new secondary school on part of the land.

Residents group, councillor thought TDSB had sold land to French school board

Midland Park residents are angered over a misunderstanding with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).
A meeting was held in March with representatives of Toronto Land Corporation (TLC) – a subsidiary of the TDSB tasked with the redevelopment and sale of school board lands – Ward 37 Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson and community residents. It outlined the details of the sale of lands of Bendale Business and Technical Institute and David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute.
According to residents, TDSB informed them that David and Mary Thomson C.I. was sold to the Toronto French School Board, Bendale BTI was sold to developers, and a new school on the remaining land would be erected combining the two old schools. Continue reading →
